Joe Swensson grew up in Niantic, Connecticut; however, Vermont has been his main stomping ground since he began to ski at the age of two. Beginning as a weekend skier in Killington, Joey started off his skiing career in the Hopefuls program. Originally, his heart was into mogul skiing, and he wanted to become a bump skier. The only problem was that you had to be seven years old to join the Killington Moguls program and Joey was only six at the time. Swensson joined the Alpine Racing program instead, and from there a whole new world opened up for him.
From a young age, Joey had success with skiing, and that confidence allowed his desire of becoming a champion to escalate. At 14, he decided to take the next step towards achieving his goals and enrolled in the Green Mountain Valley School in Waitsfield, VT.  From there, Joe moved on to Middlebury College where he received a degree in Economics in 2008. During his time there, he was named to the 2007 World University Games Team and also competed in the 2008 NCAA Ski Championships. In the fall of 2008, he returned to Waitsfield, VT and spent the past three seasons skiing out of GMVS.
Following the end of the 2011 ski season, Joe decided it was time to head in a different direction, which became Ski Cross. He attended a Project Gold Ski Cross camp in Mt. Hood, and then spent three weeks with the Australian Ski Cross team Down Under. These training camps allowed Swensson to gain experience with this new sport and also get a couple races under his belt. As a newcomer to Ski Cross, Joe has a lot to learn but he is determined to improve and get ready for the upcoming season.

WHY SKI CROSS: My favorite aspect of ski cross is that it combines Alpine and Freestyle into the sport of skiing.  It is important to be technically sound in your turns, but at the same time you need to be comfortable moving with the terrain and features throughout the course.

OFF THE SNOW: During the off season I enjoy spending time with my family in my home town of Niantic, Connecticut. I also work for a general contractor as a carpenter which keeps me pretty busy for most of the week, however, I am still able to find plenty of time to be on the ocean. In my free time I like to sail, swim and fish with my brother in Long Island Sound.
